Goalkeeper assessment & evaluation guide

A practical framework for evaluating goalkeeper performance across the technical areas that matter most. Use it to spot strengths, set development targets, and record progress over time.

How to use this guide

  1. Observe the keeper across multiple sessions and matches rather than one snapshot.
  2. Rate each item from 1 (developing) to 5 (advanced). Record the date and notes.
  3. Highlight the two lowest-scoring categories as the next development focus.
  4. Re-score every 6–8 weeks to measure progress and keep the assessment objective.

Rating scale

1Developing

Inconsistent or under pressure; needs coaching focus.

2Emerging

Shows the skill but lacks consistency under match pressure.

3Competent

Performs reliably in most situations.

4Proficient

Consistent in high-pressure moments and matches.

5Advanced

Can model the skill for others; match-winning reliability.

  • Times the jump and catches at the highest point
  • Punches confidently when catching is not possible

One-v-one situations

  • Rushes out at the right moment (not too early, not too late)

  • Takes command of the penalty area

Mentality & consistency

  • Recovers quickly from a goal conceded or mistake
  • Maintains focus when not heavily involved in play
  • Shows bravery to dive or claim high balls
  • Listens to feedback and applies it in the next action
  • Leads by example in training and matches

Make it actionable

Run the checklist every half term

Regular scoring turns opinion into evidence and shows progress to parents and players.

Save notes per keeper

Log scores and observations against each keeper so you can track growth over time.

Set two targets at a time

Focus on the weakest categories first. Share the targets with the keeper so they own the improvement.
